Reading Books of the Flesh

Books of the fleshAre you reading wholesome books, or books of the flesh? Do you read trendy and popular books or do you read books rooted in the Fruit of the Spirit- love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Pay attention to what you are filling into your heart. Scripture says: The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21 NIV).

A divided heart and mind is filled with both flesh and spirit. If you are reading books of the flesh, now is the time to be convicted and turn away. If this is a struggle for you, please contact us so we can pray for you to break the stronghold. Do not be tempted simply because others are reading books of the flesh. Pride says “I don’t want to be left out.” Be tempted by honoring the Lord and preparing yourself for eternal things.

The Bible says in 1 Timothy 1:13 :

  • Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. ESV
  • Till I come, devote yourself to [public and private] reading, to exhortation (preaching and personal appeals), and to teaching and instilling doctrine. Amplified Version
  • Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them. New Living Translation
  • Teach believers with your life: by word, by demeanor, by love, by faith, by integrity. Stay at your post reading Scripture, giving counsel, teaching. Message Version

If you struggle and continue to read books of the flesh, then I encourage you to memorize Galatians 5:19-21. Put these words on an index card, write them as a note in your smart phone, make them visible as a bookmark when you read. Look at different translations of the verse and find one that touches your heart. Most importantly, follow God’s will and do not be tempted by books of the flesh.
