These are my favorite devotional books for Christians. In this list you might find wonderful books for your own Christian library, or to give as gifts for family and friends. Many people appreciate devotionals for gifts, as they lead busy lives and desire to slow down. A simple devotional each morning or evening helps Christians reach this personal goal and find balance in their lives.
In this post I want to share the 14 best devotional books based on my experience as a womens ministry leader and founder of the Womens Bible Cafe. If you search “Christian Devotionals” on Amazon you’ll get more than 7,000 products so I hope this simple list will bless you and make your search somewhat easier.
1. Fixing My Eye on Jesus, Daily Moments in His Word by Anne Graham Lotz
If you want a really short daily devotional with a powerful message, then read Fixing My Eye on Jesus, Daily Moments in His Word by Anne Graham Lotz. Although the printed book is 400 pages, the book size is 4.5 by 6.5 inches so it fits great on a dresser beside your bed.
2. Experiencing God Day by Day Devotional by Richard and Henry Blackaby
The focus of Experiencing God Day By Day is joining God in His work. Based on the popular Bible study, this devotional is a daily reminder of the important lessons and the seven spiritual truths from the book. The printed version is small and makes a wonderful gift for men and women.
3. Hope For Each Day: Morning and Evening Devotions by Billy Graham
If you like the teaching of Billy Graham then you’ll really like the devotional Hope For Each Day: Morning and Evening. It’s packed with wisdom and a perfect book for any library.
4. The Duck Commander Devotional by the Robertson Family
I’ve been reading the The Duck Commander Devotional daily on my Kindle reader, and I like the simplicity of this book. Different members of the Robertson family share a daily devotion. On any day I might read a message from Uncle Si, Willie, Jase, Miss. Kay or one of the grandkids! The generational message and family unity makes this devotional unique and special. I’m currently on the waiting list for the Pink Leather Duck Dynasty Devotional, which will be released in April 2014. I’ve already informed Mr. Smith that I would like this for a Mother’s Day gift!
5. A Year With God: Living Out The Spiritual Disciplines by Richard Foster
Since I like the writings of Richard Foster, A Year With God: Living Out The Spiritual Disciplines is a reminder of the lessons learned in his book Celebration of Discipline. The book compiled by Julia Roller is a collection of the spiritual exercises and a daily reminder to walk by faith.
6. My Utmost For His Highest by Oswald Chambers
I’ve given this leather bound version of My Utmost For His Highest Devotional to most of the men in my family, and also have a copy for myself. The words and the book are beautiful….and it “smells like leather.” So there is a fragrance associated with the book that adds a unique experience to my devotional readings. Try it!
7. One Thousand Gifts Devotional: Reflections on Finding Everyday Grace
Author Ann Voskamp has a unique style of writing in word pictures, and One Thousand Gifts Devotional is based on her poetic book of giving thanks. I’ve given this book as gifts to most of the women in my family- for birthday’s, Christmas, Mother’s Day.
8. Whispers of Hope: 10 Weeks of Devotional Prayer by Beth Moore
The new paperback version of Whispers of Hope by Beth Moore is absolutely beautiful! The edging and the inside pages are very pretty and feminine. The words are powerful and thought-provoking. This is a normal size book and has lined pages for writing your devotional thoughts. I love mine!
9. Streams in the Desert: 366 Daily Devotional Readings
There is a new leather-bound version of Streams in the Desert coming out December 25, 2013 with a beautiful cover. This classic and well-loved book was first published in 1925 and continues to inspire Christians around the world.
10. The One Year Love Language Minute Devotional by Gary Chapman
A gift to yourself and your spouse, the One Year Love Language Devotional is a reminder to pray for each other daily. Learn how to express your love in his or her’s love language. Simple to understand and implement, perfect gift for an engagement, wedding or anniversary.
11. Grace For the Moment: Morning and Evening Edition by Max Lucado
I personally like morning and evening devotionals, and Grace For the Moment is a beautiful reminder to center your day on grace. Max Lucado does not sugar-coat his words and has a unique writing style. This is a perfect gift for men or women.
12. The Quiet Place: Daily Devotional Readings by Nancy Leigh DeMoss
The imitation leather cover of The Quiet Place: Daily Devotional Readings by Nancy Leigh DeMoss is beautiful and soft. If you are a fan of Nancy’s books and ministry, then you will like this devotional as much as I do.
13. Life Application Study Bible Devotional
The Life Application Study Bible Devotional is based on the popular Bible publications and deeply theological. If you like digging deeper into scripture then you’ll like this devotional as much as I do. There are 312 devotional readings…rather odd numbering! In any case, the book focuses on the life of Jesus and is filled with thoughtful questions on how to apply scripture to your own life. Great book for men or women.
14. Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence
Most Christians have read Jesus Calling by Sarah Young, or at least received a copy as a gift. I think I have personally received three gifts of this devotional to date, so I’ve included it at the end of my favorites list. Too much of a good thing perhaps! Yes.. the book is very good and worth reading personally. Published in 2004, there are several variations of this such as the Jesus Calling Teen Version with a pretty cover and Jesus Calling: 365 Devotions for Kids.[table “9” not found /]
I keep some of these devotional books on my Kindle Fire. Sometimes when I am sitting in carpool and my mind wanders, I will open a devotional book and focus on God. Simple prayer in my quiet moments of the day…
Now that you’ve read my list of the 14 best devotional books, I’d like to hear some suggestions from you as well. What are your favorite devotional books? Do you give them to others as gifts? Have you read any of the books on this list?
